1918 Graveyard
Around 3,000 Reds from Finland's Civil War, killed in prison camps, rest here.
In this graveyard are buried about 3 000 Reds, combatants during Finland’s Civil War in 1918, who where killed by the Whites or who simply died in the Ekenäs prison camp from hunger or disease. This camp claimed the lives of up to one third of all detainees. The memorial was begun in 1951, and was completed with bronze plaques in 1988. In 1993 Bishop Erik Wikström conscrated the grave area. Former president Mauno Koivisto and his wife also paid their respects during a visit.
